Are you lonely when you are alone?
"If you're lonely when you are alone, you're in bad company."
-Jean Paul Sartre
Alone we are born and alone we shall die.
On this journey of life, man the animal will seek to do three things, survive, mate and try to ensure the survival of offspring.
Obviously this is best achieved when we form tribes and interact with other tribe members. The tribe itself has its own identity which demands certain sacrifices by individuals but also offers rewards to them, such as food, safety, security, and mates. The demands on individuals are extracted from them by the conditioning of individuals and the enforcement of discipline by the tribe elders.
Each person is torn between his or her desire for freedom and the demands for conformance and sacrifice of individual freedom demanded by the society of the tribe.
Too much individual freedom and the tribe falls into anarchy, chaos and certain collapse. Too little freedom and the individuals lose their identity. The tribe begins to lose it's vitality which leads to sluggishness and an unresponsive tribe will for certain slowly decline and collapse.
Civilisations are born and they collapse, swinging like a pendulum between these two extremes of anarchic chaos and deadly rigidity. This swing from one end to the other is natural. It may occur in just a few years or even over thousand years to swing, but swing it will.
The key factor in the vibrancy, the rate of progress or decline of a civilisation depends on the quality of the individuals. When individuals are excessively selfish, lack in compassion, disrespectful of their environment the civilisation will soon collapse. When individuals within a civilisation are awakened to their potential, their rights and responsibilities towards themselves and society, the civilisations will thrive.
This awakening can never come from the outside, it has to be discovered within ourselves, when we spend some time alone with ourselves. History reveals to us that all great and successful people spent a lot of time alone, just by themselves.
The individual who is is awakened to his or her capacity, capability and to a purpose can never be enslaved. He or she can be led but never driven. Such individuals are a magnificent asset to good leaders and a dangerous curse to bad and wicked leaders.
Unfortunately bad and wicked leaders seem to be in the majority. They have created a system in which good people get transformed into human zombies,
who have lost the ability to know themselves, and who are afraid to be alone. They are uncomfortable with themselves and are lonely when they are alone.
We seek to fill this loneliness by filling our being with food, alcohol, sex, trivialities, gossip, shopping etc. We have to pay and talk to strangers just to feel human.
Yet there is hope, for we humans are basically good and divine, all we have to do is discover our divinity. This can be done when we are alone.
The moment we awaken from our slumber, our spirt and we will be one. We will never be lonely and we will realise that we are really free.
